Opera Concert Rome: Every Evening You Can Book, Venue by Venue

An opera concert Rome visitors can book is the easiest way to hear Verdi and Puccini without a theatre season ticket. This guide groups every bookable evening by venue, from St Paul's Within the Walls to the Palazzo Pamphilj terraces, and says plainly what each one is. If you want the full staged season instead, start with the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. For every venue, see our guide to the opera houses in Rome.

Quick answer Opera concert Rome in brief

Rome has two opera evenings. The Teatro dell'Opera runs a full staged season from autumn to early summer, with open-air opera at the Baths of Caracalla in summer. Alongside it, companies sell nightly opera concerts in churches and palaces: arias or a concert staging of La Traviata, an hour to two, sung in Italian. Book a concert seat from $28.

Opera house or opera concert: how to choose

Most visitors mix the two up. Here is the difference in practical terms, so you book the evening you actually want.

What the Teatro dell'Opera gives you

The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma on Piazza Beniamino Gigli is the city's opera house, seating 1,560 today. It opened in November 1880 as the Teatro Costanzi, and Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana premiered there in 1890, Puccini's Tosca in January 1900. Its staged season runs from autumn to early summer, then the company moves outdoors for the summer festival at the Baths of Caracalla, which moved to the Circus Maximus for summer 2026 while the Baths were under restoration.

Seats are sold by the theatre only, on operaroma.it, at the box office on the same square and through TicketOne. We sell none of them: the cheapest published opera seat is a gallery seat at a repeat performance for $24.50 (€22). Latecomers are not seated once the performance starts.

Read the full picture in our Teatro dell'Opera di Roma guide and its summer sister page on opera at the Baths of Caracalla.

What an opera concert gives you

An opera concert is not the opera house and does not pretend to be. It is singers, usually a soprano and a tenor, with piano or a small ensemble, performing arias and duets from La Traviata, Tosca, La Bohème and Don Giovanni. Some evenings are arias only, about an hour.

Others are a concert staging of one opera, like La Traviata at St Paul's Within the Walls, which adds costume and a small orchestra and runs a little over two hours. The advantages are practical: they play most nights of the week, seats start far below a theatre stall, no Italian is needed to follow the arias, and the venues are often buildings you cannot otherwise enter. Dress is smart casual, much lighter than the theatre, as our opera dress code guide explains.

The venues, one by one

Each concert venue has its own character, its own door and its own catch. This is what to expect at each.

St Paul's Within the Walls, Via Nazionale

This Episcopal church, the American Church in Rome, was the first Protestant church built inside the city, designed by George Edmund Street in striped brick and stone, with apse mosaics by Edward Burne-Jones. In the evening it is the busiest opera-concert venue in Rome: two La Traviata stagings, an arias evening, Three Tenors tribute programmes and New Year and Christmas concerts. Seating is in rows of chairs in the nave, priced by category, so the front rows cost more.

Tickets on the Viator listings are collected at the church box office from one hour before. It is a working church, so concerts start after the last service, and it sits about five minutes on foot from the Repubblica metro stop and the opera house, our estimate. Full detail on our St Paul's Within the Walls page.

Palazzo della Cancelleria and Sant'Andrea della Valle

The Cancelleria, built between 1489 and 1513 for Cardinal Raffaele Riario, is seen as the earliest Renaissance palace in Rome. It belongs to the Holy See and houses Vatican courts, so it is closed to ordinary visits. The evening concert is the way inside: an hour of arias and duets in a frescoed hall, entered through Bramante's courtyard, two minutes from Campo de' Fiori, our estimate.

A few minutes away, Sant'Andrea della Valle is the church where Act 1 of Tosca is set. The Tosca evening there pairs an audio-guided visit of the church with Puccini arias sung inside it. Cover shoulders and knees for the church.

Both venues are covered on our Palazzo della Cancelleria and Sant'Andrea della Valle pages.

The small rooms: Waldensian church, Trastevere oratory, Via Firenze, Doria Pamphilj

The Waldensian church hosts the Opera da Camera di Roma arias concerts, 50 minutes with tenor, soprano and grand piano in a room of only a few rows, so you sit close to the singers. The same company runs the candlelit Italian opera night and the Freddie Mercury Opera Show at Via Firenze 38, a crossover of Queen songs arranged for opera voices, worth knowing it is not opera. In Trastevere, the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista dei Genovesi on Via Anicia holds a 75-minute greatest-hits concert with a drink and snacks after, doors at 19:15 and a 19:30 sharp start.

The priciest room is Palazzo Doria Pamphilj on Via del Corso, where a small audience visits a private apartment and then hears a concert on baroque instruments, with a dinner option stretching the evening to 3.5 hours.

Booking, prices and what you get

Concert tickets are simple, but a few rules repeat across every venue and are worth knowing before you pay.

How the seats and tickets work

Every concert here is an individual ticket that includes the concert itself, nothing else to add at the door. At St Paul's, seats are priced in categories A, B or VIP, and VIP adds skip-the-line entry. At the Cancelleria and the Waldensian church you collect tickets at the box office, so arrive with the booking confirmation.

At the Trastevere oratory the box office assigns seats on the Viator listing. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is standard across these listings, which makes them easy to fit around a changing itinerary. For the theatre side of town, our Rome opera tickets guide explains how season seats and same-day sales work, including the theatre's rule that same-day tickets are sold at the venue from one hour before the performance.

What your money buys at each price point

From $28 to about $40 you get an hour to 90 minutes of arias with piano or small ensemble in a church: the Opera da Camera evenings, the St Paul's arias ticket and the Trastevere aperitivo concert sit here. Around $45 to $67 you move up to a full La Traviata staging with orchestra, the Tosca evening with its audio-guided church visit, or the palace hour at the Cancelleria, where the room is the extra you pay for. From $94 upward the music comes bundled with access: the private apartment and baroque instruments at Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.

Our honest advice: if you have never been to an opera concert, start with the arias hour. If you already know you love Verdi, the La Traviata staging is worth the extra. For cheaper theatre seats, the gallery of the opera house starts at $24.50 (€22), listed on our Teatro dell'Opera di Roma page.

Planning the evening around the concert

Concerts start between 18:00 and 20:30 depending on the venue, so the rest of the evening shapes itself around the door time.

Timing, dinner and dress

The early slots are the flexible ones. The Chopin and arias concerts in the Waldensian church run 50 minutes, and the Trastevere oratory evening starts at 19:30 sharp with doors at 19:15, ending in time for dinner in Trastevere after. The La Traviata stagings start 20:30 and end about 22:30, which pairs well with a late Roman dinner beforehand.

Dress is smart casual at the church and palace concerts, and shoulders and knees covered if the concert is inside a consecrated church you enter as a visitor. There is no opera-house rule here: the evening-dress request applies to the Teatro dell'Opera on opening nights and premieres only, as our opera dress code guide sets out. If you want dinner and music in one booking instead, see the dedicated opera dinner in Rome options.

Where to base yourself and what else is on

Four of the seven venues sit within a short walk of each other in the centre: St Paul's on Via Nazionale, the Cancelleria off Campo de' Fiori, Sant'Andrea della Valle on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and the Waldensian church near Piazza Venezia, so a hotel near Repubblica, the Pantheon or Campo de' Fiori puts most evenings on foot. Our where to stay for the opera guide maps the areas. If an arias night leaves you hungry for more music, Rome also runs a wide circuit of instrumental programmes: Vivaldi's Four Seasons, candlelit Chopin and after-hours Pantheon concerts, all covered in our classical concerts in Rome guide.

And if you specifically want the famous tenor repertoire, our Three Tenors in Rome page explains why those evenings are tributes by today's tenors, not the original singers.

Opera concert Rome: questions

Where can I watch an opera concert in Rome?

In seven bookable venues: St Paul's Within the Walls on Via Nazionale, the Palazzo della Cancelleria, Sant'Andrea della Valle, the Waldensian church, the Trastevere oratory, the Methodist church on Via Firenze and Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. Each is compared in the table above with a link to its guide, and the theatre season at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma runs separately from autumn to early summer.

What is the best opera to see in Rome?

Our pick for a first evening is La Traviata at St Paul's Within the Walls, a concert staging with singers, a small orchestra and some costume, a little over two hours. If you would rather have the famous arias without a full plot, the 90-minute arias evening in the same church is the best value start.

Is there an opera concert in Rome tonight?

Very likely, since the church and palace concerts play most nights of the week, but which one runs depends on the company's calendar. Check the dates on the listing before you book, and remember free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start applies to these tickets.

Is a church opera concert the same as going to the opera house?

No. A concert is singers, usually with piano or a small ensemble, performing arias or a concert staging. There is no full staging, no theatre orchestra and no interval scene changes. The opera house sells its own staged season seats, which we do not sell.

What should I wear to an opera concert in Rome?

The listings for St Paul's and the Cancelleria say smart casual, and churches ask for shoulders and knees covered. Evening dress is only requested at the Teatro dell'Opera on opening nights and premieres. Our Rome opera dress code guide has the full rules venue by venue.

How long is an opera arias concert in Rome?

Between 50 minutes and 90 minutes for most arias evenings. The Waldensian church concert is 50 minutes, the Cancelleria palace hour is 60, the St Paul's arias evening about 90. The La Traviata stagings are the long option at around two hours or more.

Are the Three Tenors concerts in Rome sung by the original tenors?

No. They are tributes by today's tenors performing the arias and Neapolitan songs the 1990 concerts made famous, starting with Nessun dorma. The original concert was sung at the Baths of Caracalla in July 1990. Our Three Tenors in Rome page compares the current tribute programmes.

Do I need to speak Italian to enjoy an opera concert?

No. The arias are sung in Italian with short spoken introductions in English on these listings, and the stories of La Traviata, Tosca and La Bohème are well known. For evenings needing no Italian at all, the church and palace concerts and the theatre's guided tours are the safest picks.
